Last November, KCAB INTERNATIONAL launched KCAB NEXT, a platform designed with young professionals in mind, to provide a forum where ideas can be exchanged and professional friendships can be fostered within the arbitration community in Korea. Through its 12-strong steering committee, KCAB NEXT will organize and support events in which young arbitration practitioners can network, learn and collaborate on long-term projects relevant to dispute resolution.
With the support of KCAB INTERNATIONAL, KCAB NEXT will hold periodic networking social events and yearly (or biannual) interactive workshops that help enhance participants legal skills as advocates and as arbitrators. KCAB NEXT also serves as an aide for KCAB INTERNATIONAL in planning for events and seminars, in which KCAB NEXT’s valuable advice assists in reaching out to potential speakers most relevant to current trends and developments in international arbitration. Such events not only promote KCAB INTERNATIONAL, but also promote the arbitration community and its members, thereby bolstering Korea as a hub of international arbitration.
The steering committee has been carefully selected on the basis of the members’ professional reputations in the Korean arbitration market, whilst ensuring that the committee represents the diversity that exists in this field in terms of gender, nationality and legal background. David MacArthur (BKL) and Robert Wachter (Lee & Ko) serve as co-chairs of the committee. The rest of the committee is made up by SeungMin Lee (Shin & Kim), Hyungkeun Lee (Yulchon), Jinhee Kim (Jipyong), John Kim (KL Partners), Thomas Walsh (Clifford Chance), Lars Markert (Nishimura & Asahi), Zachary Sharpe (Jones Day), Dana Kim (Herbert Smith Freehills), Joel Richardson (Kim & Chang) and Yu Jin Tay (Mayer Brown).
KCAB NEXT aims to usher in the much needed changes of the arbitration field, providing a channel through which the next generation of leading arbitrators and international advocates can be discovered and nurtured.
